The veins in his arms and neck bulged liked worms crawling through his corded muscles each time he lifted the back of the truck box. Sweat ran thin streams down his exposed massive upper body. He could feel his fingers losing their grip a little more each time he lifted, but he dug them in harder, gritting his teeth as he struggled to get it up again to full height. His body screamed in protest, the gruelling workout pushing his incredible strength to its very limit.
With a rage-filled roar, he lifted it once more as high as his exhausted limbs would allow. He held it up, each second feeling like an eternity, each moment causing his body to hate him further, but he held, letting vivid memories fuel his strength. Finally, even they could not help him and the truck bed came crashing down in front of him.
On shaky legs, Blare walked over to a barrel of cool water. Looking down at himself he winced, as he always did, at the twisted, scarred monster that returned that gaze. It had been nearly five years now since the fire and he wondered if he would ever accept it, get used to his own reflection. He somehow doubted it.
He dunked his scarred head deep into the depths of the water and drank his fill before allowing himself up for air.
“Blare.”
Blare held onto the sides of the barrel as he caught his breath and composed himself which he found harder to do knowing who was behind him. That voice brought one of two things, both stirring two powerful emotions within him.
“Cody, I am glad you’ve returned.” He stood to his full impressive height and squared his powerful shoulders, “I hope you’ve brought what I asked for.”
Cody watched the massive man’s back flex and knew it was done for intimidation; it was working. He swallowed back the lump in his throat. “Ragnor and Beltor have him, the girl too,” he blurted, almost too fast to make sense of.
The words struck him like a knife being twisted between the ribs. The wood beneath his fingers cracked and splintered against his grip. “And the cure?”
Even if he couldn’t see the laboured, rage-filled breaths, he would have been able to hear them. “If it was still on Archer, they have it now.”
“You’re telling me the cannibals have my cure?”
Cody could feel his heart beating painfully in his chest. “I...I’m afraid so, boss.”
“I thought I told you not to return to me empty handed, Cody.”
“I know what you said, but I didn’t have the men to even attempt to take the cannibals on to get it back. Who knows how many of those cunts are in that network of caves.”
“Did you try talking to them?”
Cody felt the blood drain from his face by Blare’s tone. “Of course I did... but they attacked us...” he didn’t finish before the scarred man turned on him with unreal speed.
Blare backhanded the dark-skinned man with such violent force he felt Cody’s jaw crack before being torn from his feet.
